About this series

This month we have a really special one… James Davidson aka Submotive is right up there with the most talented and highly regarded engineers in D&B, no question. Formerly one half of the sensation Ulterior Motive, and now producing solo as Submotive as well as being Goldie’s Production partner, he has too many accomplishments and projects to really mention His music has been tearing up the sets of most DJs for many years and he has exemplary skills in all areas of production and sound design, but for this season it made sense to start with the beats and breaks… Diving deep into his philosophy and technique for creating modern funk beats at Drum & Bass’ tempo & sonic requirements. James teaches a comprehensive tutorial which spans so much: from the use of recorded breaks, adding foley textures, processing methods and even how new and exciting AI software can be incorperated. A special video and one that’s been around 8 or 9 years in the making. Pt1: Re-pitching & Sequencing Breaks Pt2: Developing Texture Pt3: Foley & Character Pt4: Crunch & Atmosphere Pt5: Producing The Beat Pt6: Synth & AI drum Layers
